User Activity Tracking - Analytics for Applications

I am completing a Windows Desktop gadget that downloads plugins from my web server. I am wondering how I can track the use of these plugins for reporting purposes, for example, see which plugins are popular, in which countries, how many times the plugin is used per day / month / week and other similar things.

Logging with each user action can cause problems with the server, as there will be constant requests. Is it better to keep a local log and upload it regularly to the server, or can you use something like Google Analytics or another provider for this kind of thing?

If you use javascript to create your gadget, it should be possible to include Google Analytics scripts. You can then call the function _trackPageviewwhen your user does something that you want to track.

You can also use Google analytics without javascript .
