STXXL equivalent in Java

Question

I am looking for a collection structure designed for huge Java datasets that behaves transparently, like STXXL for C ++.

It should transparently switch to disk, but much more efficiently than a regular OS-based VM replacement. Replacing the replacement StringBuffer / String will be a big plus.
