What is the easiest way to create multi-page archives on Unix?

tar|gzipgreat, except that the files can get too large, and transferring them over the network becomes complicated. DOS-era archivers were commonly used to create multi-page archives, one per floppy, but gzip does not seem to have this capability (due to the Unix streaming philosophy).

So what is the easiest and most reliable way to do this on Linux (and obviously with an archive size of ~ 2 GB rather than 1.44 MB)?

I will no longer use gzip for archiving, just for unpacking the archives of other people who have not yet been converted :-)
