I am engaged in the development and testing of various ideas for an application whose main function is to notify users of occurring events and provide them with a choice of actions for each.
A standard choice would be to create an event queue that displays a popup on the taskbar with events and actions, but I want this tool to be as less intrusive and destructive as possible.
What I need is a good book or documents devoted to studying how to maximize user productivity in these integrity-violating scenarios (in other words, how to achieve a perfect degree of annoying, not too much, not too little).
The user is supposedly interested in these events, they subscribe to them and can choose actions for each of them.
I prefer books and documents, but the usual wisdom of StackOverflow is also appreciated.
