Visual Studio issues and compilation for a large number of files

Question

In our current solutions / projects, several classes are combined into one file, they tell me that this was done due to the slow compilation time in VS.

Is this a proven problem and solution?

Can we split them now when we use Team VS2008? Has anyone else divided classes into different files and still had good performance?

This is a confirmed problem and a confirmed solution. At Tech Ed this year, they said that it would no longer be a problem in VS2010, in which you can download the beta and try it.
