Better thumbnails from larger image files

I display images from other sites as thumbnails. To do this, I display them in a smaller img tag, so the browser reduces the size.

The problem is that the quality of these images (which I do not control) is decreasing. They also look much better in FF and Safari than in IE.

Is there a way to make these images better without caching them on my server? (e.g. javascript library that resizes with better quality)? Any idea is much appreciated.
