I am using Visual C ++ 2008 Express Edition. The WIN32 preprocessor directive does not seem to be defined by default, so when I am surrounded, I include WIN32 in #ifndef, it still includes them.

In VS 2008 Pro, you right-click the project and select Properties. Then find the preprocessor definitions in the configuration properties | C / C ++ | Preprocessor.
