What is Crystal Reports for .NET?

I have heard about Crystal Reports for many years, but I'm really confused why a small ActiveX component that simply displays and outputs data from databases (right?) Should be considered an entire product within the VS product suite.

Is this something better, for example, something for Windows Server that allows you to create a server-side report server as PDF files or similar, why is it considered so important?
