I have a 5-year-old G4 PowerBook that I use while traveling, and I intended to do some work while I leave for the next few weeks.
Eclipse just looks awfully slow. I tried to configure the memory allocated for the virtual machine, but it does not seem to be very much :)
Any thoughts on why this is so slow? I do not understand this problem on my desktop - and it has less RAM, although it runs on Linux.
If I spoil a dead horse, what would you recommend as a Java development environment?
Ideally, I would like to get good code, since my mental abilities are somewhat limited :)
Thank you all for your answers. I just installed netbeans on a laptop, removed some of the cracks and imported my project. After spending about half an hour scanning the project (there are a ton of external libraries), I am glad to say that it is very responsive. Code completion works beautifully (although not as intuitively as eclipse). Unfortunately, I seem to be able to choose only one of your answers - although I will use many of them. A new laptop is on the cards when I get back from the trip.
