Are cookies required for a Ruby on Rails application?

Is Rails True to Cookies? The flash seems to be part of the session, and the session uses cookies ... so when I turn off the cookie in Firefox, the Rails application running shows

[error] ActionController :: InvalidAuthenticityToken

Is it true that cookies are required for the RoR application?

Update: or, to start the Rails application again, what is the easiest way? (and if it is only one server (Apache runs mod_rails), is that easier?)
