I'll start with a small background for the perspective on the question, what legitimate questions can I ask to determine the right version control tool for the real needs of my development teams?
The developers used ClearCase, as the IBM consulting solutions development team installed it for use during a large proprietary project. During this project, Rational Suite was used for tasks, testing, etc. After completing this project, only ClearCase was used as the source code storage method. Unfortunately, at this time, ClearCase is used by developers as a required tool. Before the start of the global project in early 2009, other colleagues abroad used mainly SVN. The global project now requires these developers to use the ClearCase Remote Client (CCRC).
I noticed that the tool, although very powerful, is too much for their development needs. The UCM process is implemented locally, but there are many expressed disappointments during the steps of the process, and especially when using CCRC. Another problem is other development tools that require files to be writable in order to complete development tasks, whereby developers can capture to work.
Since many companies now use outsourcing and re-evaluate all their strategies in order to remain competitive and financially viable, I would like to confirm that we have the right tool for the right reasons and one that will support not only events and development needs today, but and for the future. I look forward to a better understanding of this issue.
