Why Subversion Does Not Allow "." and "@" in usernames? Or that?

We want to use the same user ID in all our dev tools, but this restriction from subversion prevents us from using email addresses as usernames.

Well, since you can create groups of multiple users and refer to them later using @ <groupname>, I assume that having @ in your normal username can be a problem.

This is an example from the default authz file created when creating a new svn repository:

[groups]
harry_and_sally = harry,sally
[repository:/baz/fuz]
@harry_and_sally = rw

harry_and_sally /baz/fuz.
