Google Contacts API - too risky?

I am considering using the Google Contacts API for webapp, but I am worried that the user may have a bad experience that could be blamed on me.

I intend to use the data in a responsible manner, I could blame someone else for abuse of it. Has anyone else had this? What have you done with this?

I think this problem as a whole will make people shy of third-party contact applications, and for this reason you should avoid having your application depend on it.

After reading my story, I can say for sure that now I will never allow a third-party application to access my contacts through the API for any reason.
