SSIS Packages - Versioning and Maintenance Issues

We have been developing SSIS packages for about a year and have two main problems associated with servicing these packages:

1) We use version control, but trying to identify changes between package versions is a nightmare - the results of the textual difference between the two versions of the package are mostly unusable.

2) For someone unfamiliar with the package, the tools for maintenance assistance are small. For example, trying to find where a particular column is configured is not easy. The only search you can do is xml - you have to reverse engineer it to determine where the column is used

Does anyone have any ideas for tools / methods to help deal with these issues?

Have you tried using BIDS Helper? It does not solve all problems with SSIS version control (which is terrible, I agree), but its Smart Diff does a little better.

You are right, SSIS is quite difficult to maintain.

The only advice I can give you is to develop your packages, following the principle of shared responsibility. You will have many small packages, but they will be less prone to change and will be easier to maintain when they do.
