Text-to-HTML Converter for PHP

What text for HTML to PHP converter would you recommend?

One example would be Markdown, which is used here in SO. The user simply types in a text field with some natural formatting: enter at the end of a line, an empty line at the end of a paragraph, an asterisk highlights bold text, etc. And this syntax is converted to HTML tags.

Simplicity is the main function we are looking for, there is no need for a large number of features, but those basic ones that should be very intuitive there (automatic conversion of URLs to links, emoticons, paragraphs).

A big plus will be if there is a WYSIWYG editor for this. Semi-wysiwig, like here, in SO will be even better.

Extra points would be if it corresponded well to the Zend Framework.

I will stick with my initial idea of adopting Texy.

None of the products mentioned here actually surpass it. I had a problem with Texys syntax, but it seems to be quite standard and is present in other products.

It is very lightweight, supports very natural syntax and has an excellent "half" wysiwyg Texyla editor (wiki in Czech only)

If you want WYSIWYG, I am a big fan of FCKeditor . It converts user input to HTML before submitting the form, not after, but has a beautiful PHP library for using it and a PHP connector for handling file upload / viewing (along with several other languages).

If you want something that can be read as plain text but output as HTML, I will vote for Markdown.
