How to point Blender to the python version I installed

Note that your version of Blender must be compiled with the specific version of Python that is paired with it, and THAT is the version of Python that you must install on your computer. The same problem arose when Python 2.5 was fairly new and Blender was still distributed with 2.4 compiled into - see http://www.blender.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11063 ; I suspect you are facing the same problem. What message of the "Compiled with Python 2.x" form gives your Blender at the beginning? That should be your key to installing Python (unless you want to recompile Blender from the source to support your favorite version of Python, of course!)
