How to open the source code base?

The company I'm working on is facing some difficulties, and our future, say, is uncertain. In recent years, we have developed a framework for building community and social networking applications. We believe that this initiative should not be completely lost and that it can be useful for the community, so we decided to open it.

I have some questions regarding this process:

  • How to choose the most suitable license, knowing that the original authors can still contribute and / or make some consultations?
  • What changes need to be made to the codebase?
  • Do you have some pointers to some existing documents / books that cover this broad topic?

I know that these questions are open enough and that there is no simple answer, but I would like to hear from some people with similar experiences.

Thanks in advance!
