Monitoring MySQL software? SNMP?

I was asked to see if we can somehow control the "health" of the mysql server. The suggestion was that there might be snmp support (this is for version 5.0.x). I could not find the final information about this - the link to the link would be great.

The real problem is getting periodic status or mysql state information. We could write our own process so that sites actively talk to it and then publish it in our graphical interface (the GUI is not talking to mysql right now).

Is there a simple mechanism that can be used or another best practice when you are not interested in mysql content but just want to know what its status is? (up, down, available, others, etc.)

The gui application is java, the rest of our material is a combination of java and C ++

I'm not looking for a third-party solution - I just want to know if mysql is publishing snmp data to other users.
