Is UML the right language for writing software drawings?

I had a conversation last week with a colleague about architecture (real architecture, as with building design). During our conversation, it turned out that the architectural drawings give the architect, builder and contractor all the details they need to create something. This made us both think about the state of software development and that there is no generally accepted approach to describe software design.

We have UML, but I find it often difficult to convey enough details without too complicated schemes. Are there any good examples of great software that has been developed using complex UML diagrams?

Again, does a large set of software drawings even be useful? Indeed, refactoring and restoring software is much cheaper than restoring a skyscraper. Are architectural drawings the wrong analogy for software development? Is there a better analogy you can think of?

Architectural drawings represent an almost accurate representation of the actual house. They are not, as a rule, an abstraction corresponding to the model of how the house should look, they represent an idea of ​​how the house will look.
