Firefox stuck on "pending" or "transferring data from"

I have a website that includes a button that has a CSS style to show a clear image on hover. I waited for the page to fully load, then hover over this button.

Firefox will show a new image, but the status bar will get stuck, showing either "data transfer from www.server.com" or "wait on www.server.com" and it will never disappear. I can see through Firebug net view that the image loads correctly during hover time, and I do not see any other errors anywhere.

What could be the reason for this? I ask because I have a stray problem on this page with the following scripts to complete the Ajax call.

Is it a common problem that Firefox is stuck showing this status? What are the reasons?

I don't know why this is stuck, but there are better ways to do rollovers. Place both normal and guidance images on the same image. Then use background-positionto roll over:

a.btn {
  background-image: url("/img/btn.png");
  background-position: 0px 0px;
}
a.btn:active {
  background-position: 0px 50px;
}
a.btn:hover {
  background-position: 0px 25px;
}

The above CSS is for rollover with three states with height 25px. The top image is just an ordinary image; below is a hover image; and below is the image activethat appears when you click a link.
