SQL Server 2000 temporary table and table variable

Which would be more efficient when storing some temporary data (50 thousand rows in one and 50 thousand in another) to perform the calculation. I will do this process once, at night.

How do you test effectiveness when comparing something like that?

Results will vary, making it easier to store data on disk (#temp) or in memory (@temp).
