Can a person really benefit from virtualization?

I read a lot of articles and recently heard a lot of noise about virtualization. I agree that its fairly neat to run VirtualBox and run Windows on my Mac, however I know that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

I read a lot about how companies "spin" a lot of virtual machines and all kinds of other interesting things. However, can virtualization affect me, as an individual, for running Windows on my Mac when I want to play games or something like that?

Any suggestions on how a person can take advantage of virtualization?
