I need to create a global hotkey for my application, and it should work under X11 and Windows.
What GUI tool do you use? Typically, global hotkeys are handled by the Desktop or Window Manager. I do not believe that the Python built-in toolkit (tkinter) can create global hotkeys. You can see xlib for Unix and win lib for windows.
Just an add-on - in windows, if you use wxpython in your application, you can register a hotkey . Example here
