Best way to implement try catch in php4

The closer you can get into try-catch block in php4?

I am in the middle of a callback during an xmlrpc request, and it should return a specially structured array no matter what.

I need to check all calls to external resources, which will lead to a deep stack of nested if-else blocks, ugly.
