Does the GPL infect?

Quick question.

I am doing the conversion of JavaScript code licensed by the GPL (and not created by me) to PHP. Is the original GPL suitable or can I put any license for the converted code?

I found this on SO , but I wonder if it is applicable.

It really should never be seen as a legal issue. It is really about doing the right thing.

Before looking at the legal side of things, first consider common sense and politeness to the original author. The legal aspect should really be the second thought.
