What common backend can I safely get from the iPhone and Android app?

I’m thinking of creating an application for the iPhone and Android, which will need to access the shared backend to get account information. Can I access the web service via https? What other way would allow me to have one backend interface available to both?

They work on http and https, which are a fairly common protocol. I suggest you go with a RESTful web service so that you provide your service through a URI, for example http://www.myservice.com/weather/zip/98007 , which will return an XML block that can be parsed by the client.

If you start from scratch, I would definitely go with a service RESTfulthat returns / accepts JSON... there are many libraries for both platforms that will accept JSONand turn them into arrays and dictionaries.
