What do I need to develop SharePoint applications?

Question

I am a .NET developer, and I'm used to writing standard WinForms and ASP.NET applications.

In a few months, I will get involved in a project that requires the development of Sharepoint. The problem is that ... I am at zero relative to Sharepoint, and I have no idea how Sharepoint works.

What software / tools do I need to be able to learn and develop applications with sharepoint? I noticed "SharePoint Server 2007" there, do I need it? What about Office, do I need a special version of Office to develop Sharepoint?

And the second question: how do these things connect and integrate? Visual Studio, IIS, SharePoint Server, Office ...?

Any review on this subject would be highly appreciated :)

What are your requirements__ What should you write. My experience sitting on Sharepoint land for the past 2 years is not a silver bullet. You can easily get much more problems with performance, deployment, etc., because you tried to use Sharepoint for everything ...
