Are custom facelet features dirty?

I have several places in the facelets web application where we use custom facelet functions. For some reason, they feel dirty, and I can't understand why. What is the StackOverflow view of custom facelet functions?

I see how you can think it. I believe that overuse of such features is probably a poor design. However, there are times when your life simply simplifies the definition of a custom facelet function; therefore, you should not fire them out of control.
