Use IE8 compatibility mode to test webpage displaying IE6?

I am still running IE6 on my development PC, because I use it to test the sites I am developing.

I usually test only on IE6, considering that IE6 is the lowest common denominator of the IE browser family. If this works well in IE6, everything will be fine for IE7 and IE8. Another browser that I use for testing is Firefox 3.x. I assume that these 2 browser families mainly cover the majority of web surfers.

It is for this reason that I have not upgraded to IE7. Now that IE8 can display web pages in compatibility mode, is it wise to use IE8 to check the compatibility of sites with IE6?

I understand that most people would recommend using a virtual machine. But it's pretty hard to browse the web.

Try SuperPreview or the whole package (Expression Web declared in Mix) if you can ..

SuperPreview is Microsoft's new free standalone application (still in beta) that lets you see how your websites will view different versions of Internet Explorer, making switching from IE6 to 7 and 8 much easier than before, without need to start a virtual machine to run IE6 or a separate computer designed to run IE6.
