Why does loading for different projects have hash codes or checksums?

I have never used a checksum when downloading various executables or mail files from the Internet. I know that it is used to check consistency and add some security. But this is necessary when you boot from a respectable project such as Apache or Microsoft. How many of us actually use checksums or hash codes to verify the content?

FYI, please let me know if I deviate too far from the valid content of StackOverflow.
