I need a graphics editor to create PNG files with alpha opacity

Unfortunately, Photoshop is currently the only image editor that I can use to create PNG files with alpha transparency.

I really hate this. But I need it. But he cannot afford it.

The Pixelmator looked so good, but it crashes over and over again. On my new MacBook Pro. Indeed, this is not an option.

Gimp: It fires immediately after launch. And I really don't like this X11 thing. Not working on my mac.

Gimpshop: same problem.

I did not install anything except the Opera, Xcode and iWork browser.

So: what else can help me?

I usually have JPEG images, and I need to crop the object in this image and save as PNG with alpha transparency. I need to do a little masking editing in the alpha channel so that it looks smooth in the background.

What tools do you use for your iPhone apps?

Paintbrush is pretty simple, but it's free and works on Mac OS.

Acorn (as mentioned) is a great and very curious indie Mac software. I also used Seashore for things like the nav bar or toolbar buttons, where I had to mess with the alpha channel as my own thing, because I thought it was better. (That would not be my full time.)
