Android - inconsistent ringtone behavior

I am trying to add ringtones to the media / ringtones folder from my application. If the phone is connected via USB to a computer or installed on my Mac, ringtones do not appear on the SD card or in the ringtone settings.

But if I run the application with the USB interface disabled, the ringtones look fine. This is not a problem with Ringdroid, which does the same.

Can someone please tell me what might be wrong.

Have you checked the settings for mass storage of usb? It must be turned off if you want to access the contents of the SD card from your phone.
