Benefits of cross-platform development?

Are there any advantages to developing an application on two or more different platforms? Are there advantages to using another compiler on the same platform?

Yes, especially if you plan to distribute your code across multiple platforms.

But even if you do not cross the platform, this is one form of future protection; if it works on several (diverse) platforms today, it is more likely to work on future platforms than anything that has been configured, tweeked and specialized for working on version 7.8.3. Clean installation of boxes X suppliers X suppliers (patch 1452) and nothing more.

There seems to be an advantage in finding and simply preventing errors with another compiler and another OS. Different processors can display server problems early on. There is pain at the GUI level if you want to stay native at that level.

Some platforms have really terrible development tools. I once worked in IB, instead of using Sun ghastly toolset, peole developed the code in VC ++ and then ported it to Solaris.
