Recommendations and recommendations for handling AJAX errors

Question

I would like to receive recommendations on the best way to handle errors in AJAX-enabled applications. In particular, the methods used to register errors and the actions you take to resolve them.

The obvious priority is that I do not want any user input to be lost. I was hoping to come up with some kind of fallback mechanism so that if the AJAX message fails, you can try to use the natural form POST using the same data. Any suggestions?
