What happens with WebFrontend and what is Sharepoint 2007 / WSS 3.0 on the application server?

Question

In Sharepoint solutions, I can specify DeploymentServerType to deploy both ApplicationServer and WebFrontEnd. Unfortunately, the documentation on this is rather limited.

I'm just wondering: when will I use this option? What should I do if my solution includes both timer jobs (which should appear on the application server?) And web parts (which should be used for each web interface)? How does this affect deployment if I specify a server anyway?
