Flash Encoding (FLV): What are the preferred bit rates?

I inherited a project that sends video to a remote encoder for encoding to FLV.

Today I noticed that we are asking them to encode at 1024 Kbps. For me it seems extremely high.

What does everyone else use? What does YouTube use for “standard” and “high-quality” versions?

Thanks in advance.

Usually somewhere between 400-600 Kbps is average for standard video quality. Higher quality video is often 800-1200 kbps, but for many people this is too high a data transfer rate, so you should not have something as high as your only indicator if you do not know what your target audience will have quick connections.

It's also a good idea to offer a low bitrate stream (somewhere around 250-300 kbps) for people with very slow connections, although it’s hard to get a video to look good at that speed even with H.264, and if you are still using VP6 Then do not worry, because it will look terrible.
