How do you deal with situations when you cannot use your preferred text editor?

I was originally going to ask this question around TextMate, which, by all accounts, is a great editor, but only available for OSX. I was curious how those who took the time to learn TextMate effectively cope with the situation when they have to edit on a platform other than OSX. But this is really a more general question. How do people deal with situations where you cannot use your preferred text editor?

I use gvim and vim in the first place, and I know that these editors have a rather esoteric set of key bindings, so when I edit in another editor, I often type in the wrong things that I didn’t want to enter when trying to navigate. This can be very inefficient.

So how do people deal with such situations? Just swallow inefficiency? Try to avoid the situation or go to great lengths to get a file that needs editing in your preferred editor? Do you have one or two editors that you own and can switch between them without any problems? Do you change the key bindings of other editors to more closely match your preferred editor?

I regularly work on Linux and Windows, and sometimes OS X. Switching editors between them is a pain, so the obvious solution would be to use a cross-platform editor. Now I'm experimenting with Komodo Edit, which looks pretty promising.

If the machine does not have a decent editor, downloading and installing will not take much time.
