Using Excel (or Calc) as a web application interface or embedded widget

Problem: When working with web applications that require grid-based input (but this is not a full version, such as Google), there is a general problem. Either the web GUI sucks, or is tied to some specialized API that takes too much time and time to use effectively (not to mention that the price tends to be high for such things).

Question: Assuming that all the target users of Excel or OpenOffice (or can be said to get a copy) did anyone try to use a spreadsheet as an input form for a real-time web application?

Scenario: User X comes to your site, she gets to the page where she downloads the spreadsheet to continue the complex series, crunching in the middle of using your webapp. When she finishes, she presses a button on your specially crafted spreadsheet, and the spreadsheet itself transfers its payload through POST to your website, and then the website does something with recently collapsed numbers.

Motivation: The motivation for this issue is a huge disappointment with all the different "grid control" widgets for use on web pages. They are either insufficiently or insufficiently able to "infiltrate" as control on a web page.
