Why is the name "monitor"?

I mean monitors as described here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monitor_(synchronization)

None of the definitions here look something like this:

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/monitor

So why are they called that?

Thanks for the answers, everyone!

I was probably confused because I don’t think that monitors usually act on themselves, which seems to be happening here. For example, you use a monitor to monitor a child. I just don’t think that it would be very important for a child to control himself, but I could be wrong.
