Sending and receiving data via USB port

Question

I would like to send / receive data via the USB port to the device (from my vista computer). Is there a free / cheap library that can do this, and how will this project be involved (not taking into account what is sent or received)?

You will not indicate what is happening here. Does the device already exist? Is it already a USB device?

Without knowing anything about your situation and assuming that you control the USB protocol and device drivers, I would recommend using WinUSB .

This is much better than libusb-win32 because it is a native part of Windows and supports asynchronous communication. In addition, libusb-win32 only supports the libusb-0.1 API, which is really old.
