What is more useful to use when displaying dates relative to the current or relative to the main point of the action in time?

I just read "Open Letter to Joel and Jeff" and I noticed that there are dates on the comments regarding when the blog entry was published. Thus, the first record will always remain “12 minutes later,” and the next will always be “14 minutes later.”

From the point of view of usability, does it make sense to list the time relative to the present or when did the main action take place?

When I first saw this, I thought it was a bit confusing (I think because I did not expect this), but it grew very quickly on me.
