Can you work on a project for more than 10 years without releasing anything?

I surfed the web and ended up on the 3D Realms hiring page . It sounds good that they advertise there. Everywhere you can read things like Freedom from arbitrary end dates.

It sounded very reasonable to me, as I sometimes have problems with the schedule. But when I linked the expression to the game, they will release “when it's done” by Duke Nukem Forever. I came to the question: "Can I work on a software project for more than 10 years without releasing anything?"

No release party, no, finally sent feelings, etc.

Perhaps there are other levels of motivation that I do not know about. How do you feel about this?

Btw. some fun things about DNF: http://duke.a-13.net

Yes, you can ... find someone who will pay you ten years without releasing anything, this is another story.

Sorry, but this is not a project. A project is a commitment with a clear purpose, a defined budget, and a specific end date. If you do not have all three of them, you are not working on a project.

Another aspect: owes you. Here you need to consider things like

  • the impact on your resume, especially if you leave before the release is completed or if the project finally fails (real possibility).
  • Your professional development. Most likely, both the technology and the methods used will be at least ten years old when you finally finish.

Yes I could. This does not mean that you (or anyone else) could or should have.
