Is there a known pattern for event planning programmatically?

Question

Does anyone have a well-known solid solution for planning events (e.g., meetings, appointments, etc.) within the system. I am talking about "events" here as tasks that need to be done on a one-time or recurring basis and carried out on a schedule basis. I found the DevExpress Schedule UI component, and it has some reference to using custom objects, but I suppose someone should solve this problem already well. Thanks in advance to all for the time and effort.
