Search an external SharePoint database

Question

We are looking at the MOSS 2007 website, which will have a rather dynamic component (external product catalog). External manufacturers will be stored in a database (not managed by SharePoint), and all interaction will take place through the web parts.

Can I customize SharePoint search to index text content and an external database? Or can a custom search user be written that is also used to query an external database?

The business data catalog is intended to be a solution in this case. The BDC solution is fully scanned.

Unfortunately, BDC requires an Enterprise license for SharePoint, the high price is increasing.
