Oracle - side by side schema update technology ... are there any?

Is there any technology that will allow you to perform side-by-side updates to production schemes?

The goal is to have zero downtime when applying updates to the circuit during production. Weblogic 10 has a similar feature for its Java EE applications, where by deploying a new version of the application and new connections, switch to the new application while existing connections continue until the old application. When all old connections are completed / timeout, the old application is deleted, and the new application continues ... zero downtime.

Is there something similar in Oracle?

If you have a genuine 24/7 system, you will probably always have to do some updates. For example, add a new column as optional, update the application to install it, then make it mandatory (perhaps with some changes to the script data for existing rows).
