I got it working by unpacking .egg, so it doesn't need a cache directory for it:
Install MySQLdb (for python) as an uncompressed egg
It completely depends on whether you want to make the egg available as a public library or just for one (or several applications). Are you talking about installing Trac? If so, there are also several alternatives to make an egg available for each instance:
