What are the methods for using SecurID and similar technologies?

From Wikipedia: RSA SecurID is a mechanism developed by RSA Security to perform two-factor authentication for a user on a network resource.

I just read about this device, and it seems interesting to me. However, I'm not sure how (or even if) software (network or non-network) can use this authentication method.

I do this by the wiki community, as this is not a specific issue, but a general overview of authentication addressing using SecurID and similar technologies.
