How can I centralize the whole mechanism of the site?

Example:

The slide widget at www.slide.com can be deployed anywhere on the Internet. But slide developers have centralized editing capabilities for these widgets. Changes to the widget core will be updated in all installed widgets.

Can this be done with the whole site engine?

Say I encoded a Wordpress engine. Is it possible for me to deploy my engine on my own server clients in my own domain, while I am still able to control / update / edit the kernel and it updates all my clients.

The main reason is that customers have the right to own their content and brand. The client may need to establish his presence on the Internet, and therefore he needs his own domain, but he can still pay a fee to ensure that his engine is professionally managed and upkept.

As far as I can tell, the flash objects in the widgets of the slide site are hosted on their servers, all that is deployed elsewhere is markup that refers to a widget similar to embedding YouTube videos. If there is something there that I do not see.
