Best case for moving to a flexible development methodology?

Question

If you needed to do business with the adoption or transition to a flexible development methodology (for example, SCRUM or XP, etc.), what would you do (how do you sell the concept)?

eg.

How would you describe the concepts and benefits for a non-technical person? If you have successfully done this, what was the winning argument / case / rationale?

Edit: the reason why I ask that my friend (he is the solution architect at the company) is currently trying to decide how to approach his leadership on this topic, and I gave him what I can do to make the conditions of the proposals.
