How to connect to a host machine from a virtual PC image

I am compiling an SVN demo using a WinXP virtual PC image and cannot see my host machine from the VPC guest OS.

This demo will run when disconnected from our local network, so I installed the Microsoft Loopback adapter on my laptop. In the TCP / IP settings, I manually set the IP address 192.168.3.1 to avoid conflicts with our internal network. In the VPC image settings, I set the network type to the Microsoft Loopback adapter and set the IP address 192.168.3.2.

I cannot ping my host computer from the guest OS and vice versa. I reviewed several different practical pages on this subject, but still can not determine why this does not work. What am I missing here?

It might just be because by default Windows XP Firewall blocks ping requests.

To enable pings, follow these steps:

  • Open the Windows Firewall in Control Panel
  • On the General tab, select the Windows Firewall check box. If it is turned off, you are probably using a different firewall and will need to configure it.
  • On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button in the ICMP section.
  • Check the box next to Allow incoming ping.
  • Click OK in the ICMP dialog box.
  • Click OK in the Wndows Firewall dialog box.

Just make sure that the firewalls are disconnected from the only reason why you cannot connect the Microsoft feedback adapter. Some anti-virus software is out of date, so update it, or simply remove it from the add / remove programs, then go to the control panel and select the firewall, just make sure that the firewall should be turned off, and only we can ping from the virtual PC to place the relay Microsoft loopback ..... just check it out
